Burundi lost 1-0 to Kenya in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup back in 2017, and the goalkeeper is eyeing revenge against them when they meet in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers this Friday.

Burundi goalkeeper Jonathan Nahimana has warned his teammates not to write off Harambee Stars seven years since suffering defeat to them at the 2017 CECAFA Challenge Cup.

Burundi were beaten 1-0 by Kenya, ultimately halting their dream of clinching the regional title.

Nahimana, who has earned 34 caps for the Swallows, believes that both Burundi and Kenya have the potential to return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and secure a ticket to the World Cup.

As the experienced goalkeeper who was in goal during the 2017 match, he is expected to keep his place in the upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifier against Kenya, which will be played at the Bingu National Stadium in Malawi on June 7.

Ahead of the contest, Nahimana expects a tough match and is determined to secure a win for Burundi, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming game and the memories of the CECAFA defeat to Kenya close to seven years ago.

"I still have memories of the CECAFA defeat to Kenya close to seven years ago,” Nahimana told Sports Boom.

“We meet again next month in a very important game. It will be a tough one as both teams are from the same region, and each will be pushing hard for a win.

“Our preparations are going on well as the local-based players and a few internationals are already in camp".

Nahimana's sentiments reflect the deep impact of the 2017 defeat on the Burundian team, and his determination to secure a victory in the upcoming match against Kenya is evident.

His experience and commitment as the preferred starter for a long time further underline the significance of this upcoming game for him and the Burundian national team.

The upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifier will undoubtedly be a crucial and emotionally charged match for Nahimana and the entire Burundian team, as they seek to avenge their previous defeat and secure a vital victory in their quest for international football success.
