Manchester United have a new leader in the dressing room with Bruno Fernandes the chosen one to replace the disposed Harry Maguire.
English giants Manchester United have named Portuguese playmaker Brun Fernandes as the new captain of the club ahead of the new season.
United confirmed the appointment of Fernandes as the chosen one to replace Harry Maguire through a statement on their website on Thursday afternoon.
"Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United," the club confirmed in a statement on its website.
Fernandes replaces Maguire
After three years of keeping the armband, England defender Maguire will hand over to Fernandes as the new leader of the players at United.
Fernandes’ appointment ends Maguire’s three-year spell as United’s skipper after manager Erik Ten Hag had a showdown talk with the defender.
As reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria last week, Maguire will no longer be Manchester United's captain heading into the new season in England.
The 30-year-old had worn the armband since January 2020 but after he lost his place in the team following the arrival of Dutch manager, Ten Hag, it became certain his position as skipper was also under threat.
Maguire stripped
The player himself took to his social media account to confirm he had been stripped following a serious meeting with the club manager.
Pulse Sports Nigeria also reported that Maguire expressed his disappointment with the decision.
“After discussions with the manager today, he has informed me he is changing captain,” Maguire stated.
“He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt,” he added.
Fernandes’ brief at United
The armband is not new to the Portuguese playmaker, who wore it for most of last season with Maguire on the bench.
Fernandes joined the Red Devils on January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon and has gone on to become one of the most important players at Old Trafford.
He has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in the winter of 2020.
The club added that the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will, as captain, continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond.
