Erling Haaland gave City the lead, and the champions looked set to coast, but goals from Joao Pedro and Matt O'Riley helped the Seagulls secure a comeback victory.

The defeat meant the Cityzens have now lost four games in succession, two in the Premier League (Bournemouth, Brighton), an EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham, and the Champions League thumping at the hands of Sporting.

Key match details

Manchester City were on top of it in the early exchanges as they looked to bounce back from a disappointing defeat in the Champions League. Savinho sparked the match to life with a probing effort, forcing Bart Verbruggen into a sharp low save.

Kovacic set Savinho up earlier, and soon after he released Erling Haaland midway through the half. The Norwegian striker made no mistake, slotting home with minimal fuss.

Brighton struggled to escape their own half and look set to capitulate, but City failed to land telling blows, thanks in part to the excellent Verbruggen. Roused by their home crowd, the Seagulls clawed their way back into contention.

The contest became increasingly even, with the hosts unfortunate not to level when Pervis Estupinan's pinpoint cross was met by Jack Hinshelwood's powerful header, only for Ederson to intervene.

City's second-half stagnation prompted the introduction of Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne beyond the 70-minute mark. However, Brighton finally broke through when Pedro slammed home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

The Seagulls sealed their stunning victory five minutes later as Pedro teed up Matt O'Riley to score on his Premier League debut, capping a remarkable turnaround.
