Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Mandela has secured a long-term contract with a new Premier Soccer League team in South Africa.

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela has joined South African Premier Soccer League side Stellenbosch FC.

The 30-year-old defender's transition to Stellenbosch FC marks a significant step in his professional career, following an unsuccessful trial period at SuperSport United.

Despite training under renowned coach Gavin Hunt at SuperSport, Mandela did not secure a contract with the team which opened the door for Stellenbosch FC to swoop in.

Stellenbosch FC is gearing up for the Dstv Premiership, which kicks off on September 14, and the club is expected to unveil Mandela as their latest signing before the season begins.

The acquisition of Mandela is seen as a strategic move by Stellenbosch, especially with the departure of Ismael Toure, who is reportedly moving to Kaizer Chiefs.

A source close to the developments revealed the news to a South African publication pending his official unveiling.

"iDiski Times has now been reliably informed that Stellies completed the signing of Onyango on a two-year contract," the report stated.

Mandela's experience in the CAF Champions League with his previous club, Mamelodi Sundowns, where he made 61 appearances in all competitions, is highly valued by his new club.

Stellenbosch hopes that his background will bolster their squad as they continue their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The club recently secured a 3-0 victory against Eswatini side Nsingizini Hotspurs in the first leg of their current competition and looks forward to the return leg this coming weekend.

The defender's move to Stellenbosch FC is seen as a fresh start and an opportunity to reinvigorate his career after a challenging season at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he featured in only nine matches, including three league games in the 2023/2024 campaign.
