The Kenyan defender has not waited long to find a new home, opting to remain in South Africa after his exit from champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela is reportedly close to signing for South African club SuperSport United after his release from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mandela was among four players who were let go by the Brazilians following the end of their contracts but it seems he will not wait long before finding a new home.

According to South African outlet FARPost, Mandela was spotted in training with SuperSport on Thursday as the club formalises his singing before the unveiling.

SuperSport are looking to beef up their defence after a seventh-place finish last season with their backline having been an area of concern.

Matsatsantsa had the worst defence among the top 10 teams, conceding 33 goals, and appear keen to add Mandela’s experience to the backline to help correct that.

Mandela has endured a tough spell at Sundowns since joining the club in 2020 from Maritzburg United, despite winning three league titles, with injuries and poor form limiting his opportunities.

The 2023-24 campaign saw him claim his third straight South African top-flight crown with the Brazilians but it was another season when he played a peripheral role.

Just like the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns, Mandela was blighted by injuries and poor form that saw him given few minutes by now departed coach Rhulani Mokwena.

Mandela made 61 appearances in all competitions in the yellow and blue of Sundowns, with nine of those coming in the just-concluded campaign, which saw him feature in just three league games.
