Toney was the subject of racist abuse after scoring Brentford’s equaliser against Arsenal
Brentford have released a strongly worded statement condemning the racist abuse that forward Ivan Toney faced after the Bees’ 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League.
Toney suffers racist abuse again
Toney scored Brentford’s equaliser late in the game to deny the league leaders three points in their title race, and has faced backlash in the form of racially motivated abuse on his social media accounts, especially Instagram.
Brentford have condemned these actions and say they have been disgusted and saddened by the abuse, especially as Toney has been a victim on multiple occasions.
They also said that they would be taking the appropriate steps to bring the perpetrators to justice as they had done in the previous instance.
Brentford’s press release included the following: “Immediately after Brentford’s game against Arsenal, Ivan Toney received a barrage of abusive, racist direct messages via his Instagram account.
“We are disgusted and saddened that Ivan has had to deal with this yet again.
“We will not tolerate it and we will do everything we can to pursue the individuals involved.
Ivan was subject to similar abuse in October last year, and the perpetrator is now facing the consequences in court.”
The fight against racism in the Premier League
This latest development comes just days after it was announced that players in the Premier League would be taking the knee again as a symbol of the league’s anti-racism stance and calls into question how serious that stance actually is.
Brentford in their statement also called on fans to be more tolerant in their views and were keen to point out that there is no room for racism in the Premier League.
“How many times does this need to happen?
“We call on football fans everywhere to relish the competition and rivalry that exists between us, but to respect and embrace our differences and celebrate the diversity that exists throughout the Premier League.” Their statement read further before concluding, “There is no room for racism.”
Brentford’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal might have blown the title race wide open, and also continues the Bees great form in the league.
They have lost in the Premier League since October 2022 and are currently only five points behind Tottenham in fifth place while having a game in hand as well.
