BREAKING: Gor Mahia make U-turn over futures of Philemon Otieno & Ernest Wendo

The FKF Premier League champions have changed their mind regarding the futures of the long-serving players whose contracts had come to an end in December.

Gor Mahia have decided against releasing defender Philemon Otieno and midfielder Ernest Wendo this month, opting to give them six-month contract extensions.

The two had initially been let go by the club after their deals expired at the end of December but K’Ogalo have made a U-turn over a number of reasons.

Otieno’s extension is pegged on the fact that defender Ronney Onyango’s future is uncertain while Wendo will add depth to the club’s midfield options.

“The two players had a meeting with the club management and informed us that they had been granted an extension. We hope to be with them until the end of the season,” a source close to the two told Pulse Sports.

The duo are among the long-serving players at the club with Wendo winning seven league titles since joining in 2015 while Otieno has six, having joined K’Ogalo in 2017.

Their departure would have robbed the club some experience in the dressing room even though their game time has significantly reduced.

Club captain Otieno plays sparingly at right-back where Onyango is first-choice but with the latter seemingly looking for opportunities elsewhere, Gor Mahia do not want to leave themselves short incase of a departure this month.

Onyango has been the subject of interest from Tanzanian club Singida Black Stars but the transfer fell through after the player rejected the move, despite part of the fee having been paid.

He is, however, in the final six months of his deal and all indications point to a parting of ways either this month or at the end of the season.
