The Ivorian midfielder has been hospitalised and his recovery means he will miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in his home country
Bournemouth midfielder Hamed Traore is set to be sidelined for an extended period after being diagnosed with malaria, according to confirmation from manager Andoni Iraola. The 23-year-old, who was expected to represent the Ivory Coast in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, will now focus on recovery and undergo further tests.
Traore’s Bournemouth lot worsens with malaria diagnosis
Since joining Bournemouth during the last January transfer window, initially on loan from Serie A side Sassuolo, Traore has found playing opportunities limited. His role under both Iraola and former manager Gary O’Neil has seen him make only 10 appearances in the Premier League during his first 12 months in England, with his recent health struggles now worsening a bad situation.

Bournemouth vs Luton to be replayed after Tom Lockyer's cardiac arrest on field
The Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton Town, which was abandoned following the collapse of Luton captain Tom Lockyer, will be replayed in full.
Hamed Traore’s health setback was revealed by Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who confirmed that the midfielder had been hospitalized with malaria. The diagnosis comes as a blow to Traore, the club, and Ivory Coast, disrupting his plans to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in January.
Traore's long road to recovery from malaria
Traorè's bout of malaria is expected to result in a significant period of absence from the pitch. Manager Iraola expressed concern for Traorè's well-being and emphasized the importance of ensuring a proper recovery. The midfielder is set to miss upcoming fixtures and faces an uncertain timeline for his return to action.
“Right now he is recovering much better. The past few weeks have been a tough situation for him personally and, from a sporting perspective, he will be out for some time.
“We have to make sure that he is OK and he recovers properly. He will be out for some time,” said Iraola ahead of Bournemouth’s Premier League match against Tottenham.
Bournemouth soldiering on without Traore
Traore's absence from the Ivory Coast squad is a setback for the national team as they prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations. Bournemouth, too, will miss the midfielder's contributions as they navigate their Premier League campaign.
Manager Iraola hinted at maintaining a settled side amid Traorè's absence, especially as Bournemouth has enjoyed a successful run of six wins in their last seven Premier League games.
The team's recent form has propelled them from the relegation places to 12th in the league standings, narrowly outside the top half on goal difference.
Hamed Traorè's health condition adds a layer of adversity for both the player and Bournemouth, emphasising the need for a comprehensive recovery process. As the midfielder focuses on recuperation, Bournemouth aims to navigate the challenges ahead without his on-field contributions.
