Joe Mazzulla, the head coach of the newly crowned NBA champions Boston Celtics, revealed that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola played a pivotal role in their recent triumph.
Mazzulla claimed that he drew inspiration from Guardiola's tactical advice to improve the Celtics' transition game.
Mazulla confirms Guardiola influence on NBA finals
Speaking to reporters after the Celtics clinched the title in Game 5 against the Dallas Mavericks, Mazzulla highlighted the challenges posed by Dallas' defence, saying, "Dallas has one of the smartest defences, we had to be creative to counter them."
He credited Guardiola for providing insights that were instrumental in navigating these defensive strategies, adding "Pep [Guardiola] helped me in transitions and how to move guys.”
Celtics seal historic Championship win
The Spanish gaffer was seen watching the Celtics’ first home game of the NBA finals series, which they won before claiming two more wins on the bounce to set themselves up for a for a convincing championship.
Despite suffering a heavy defeat in Game 4 —one of the most lopsided losses in NBA Finals history— the Celtics bounced back to seal a comprehensive Series win. In Game 5, the Celtics won with an 18-point margin over the Mavericks, securing their 18th championship in franchise history.
