Bayer Leverkusen are German champions for the first time in their history, after beating Werder Bremen.
It has been a long time coming, and now, Bayer Leverkusen have officially ended Bayer Munich's reign, beating Werder Bremen 5-0 to lift the Meisterchale.
How it happened
In a historic showdown at the BayArena, Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen etched their name into Bundesliga folklore with a resounding victory over Bremen. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as Leverkusen aimed to clinch their maiden Bundesliga title and potentially secure an unbeaten season.
From the onset, Leverkusen asserted their dominance, with Nathan Tella's incisive play setting the tone. His pinpoint delivery found Piero Hincapié, whose effort was denied by a stellar save from Michael Zetterer. The breakthrough came soon after, courtesy of Victor Boniface's emphatic penalty, sending the home crowd into raptures.
With the nerves settled, Leverkusen surged forward, creating a flurry of chances. Amine Adli rattled the crossbar before halftime, leaving the hosts with a slender lead but buoyed by the prospect of history in the making.
The second half saw Leverkusen elevate their performance to new heights. Granit Xhaka unleashed a thunderous strike from distance, further extending Leverkusen's advantage. Florian Wirtz, a standout performer throughout the season, added his name to the scoresheet with a clinical finish.
As the final whistle loomed, Wirtz completed his hat-trick, igniting scenes of jubilation among the fans. Leverkusen's triumph not only ended Bayern Munich's reign but also positioned them as serious contenders for further silverware in the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League.
With an invincible campaign within reach, Leverkusen's remarkable season under Alonso has solidified their place in German football history.
