Varane on the other hand, is expected to return earlier after he and Martinez got injured on Thursday.

Manchester United have received a further defensive blow after Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Argentine will not be available for Erik ten Hag after suffering a fractured metatarsal in United's 2-2 Europa League draw with Sevilla on Thursday.

While Martinez will not feature again in the ongoing campaign, his defensive partner Raphael Varane is expected to be out for a ‘few weeks’ with a foot injury, according to the club.

The French centre-back was forced off at half-time in the same game.

"Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot," the club revealed in the latest update.

"However, the Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season."

This is Martinez’s first season with the Red Devils, and he has made 45 club appearances whilst establishing himself as a regular starter under Ten Hag and helping the Red Devils win the Carabao Cup.

As Martinez and Varane are sidelined, the Dutch tactician will now depend on Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at the heart of his defense.

"I have a lot [of faith]," said Ten Hag of the available players. "I think I have decent centre-halves and they proved that in the past and have proved it this season.

"I think we have four or five very good centre-halves who can do the job."

Maguire has struggled to be a consistent starter under Ten Hag and has so far started in just six Premier League matches, scoring an own goal in stoppage time to hand Sevilla their equaliser on Thursday.

On the other hand, Lindelof has only started five league games under the former Ajax manager.
