The NSL club was compelled to refund a token of support from the candidate who was floored at last week’s FKF elections won by Hussein Mohammed.
National Super League (NSL) club have been forced to refund Ksh50,000 advanced to them by Kakamega Homeboyz boss Cleophas Shimanyula last month.
The Vihiga-based club received the financial support in light of their cash constraints that had made it impossible to travel to Mombasa to honour a match against SS Assad.
However, it has now emerged that Shimanyula’s support was not an act of kindness but had strings attached as he was among candidates running for the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential seat in last week’s elections.
The Homeboyz supremo expected that Luanda Villa would return the favour by voting for him but the club cast their vote in favour of another candidate, in the elections won by Hussein Mohammed, as Shimanyla managed just four votes.
In light of the loss, Shimanyula sought to recover his money from the NSL club which has now made the payment and gone public about it.
“This is to officially confirm that Luanda Villa Soccer Club has refunded Ksh50,000 to Mr Cleophas Shimanyula as per his request,” read a statement from the club.
“The amount was initially sent by Mr Shimanyula to assist the team with travel expenses for a scheduled match in Mombasa. However, following the FKF elections and subsequent developments, Mr Shimanyula requested the funds be returned.”
Appearing to suggest that there were no hard feelings, Luanda Villa hopes the gesture will end any animosity that might exist between the club and Shimanyula.
“Luanda Villa Soccer Club appreciates the initial support from Mr Shimanyula and respects his request for a refund. The club remains committed to fostering positive relations with all its stakeholders. We consider this issue resolved and have updated our financial records accordingly,” added the statement.
