Junior Starlets players who were facing a headache over whether to choose between exams and the FIFA U17 World Cup can breathe easy as the standoff has been resolved.
The exam conundrum that faced eight Junior Starlets players ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup has now been resolved after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) agreed to allow them sit their KCSE examinations after the World Cup.
Eight players, who are Form Four candidates, were in dilemma as the exams start from October 22 while the World Cup will take place in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3.
It meant they had to choose either exams or a lifetime opportunity to play the World Cup, leading the Ministry of Sports and Football Kenya Federation to seek permission from the Ministry of Education to allow the girls sit for their exams at a later date.

The teen sensation has been crowned after leading Kenya’s U17 Women’s team to the FIFA World Cup.
Now, the affected players have received a relief after KNEC granted them permission to sit their exams after the World Cup.
“As per KNEC policy of handling hardship cases affecting candidates sitting national examinations, the council will liaise with centre managers of the affected six secondary schools and make proper arrangements within the examination period for administration of the 2024 KCSE papers that clashes with the World Cup fixtures for the Kenyan team,” said a letter from KNEC.
“Further, KNEC wishes to bring to your attention that there will be no national assessment at Grade 8 in October 2024 and thus the Grade 8 learner in the team is not affected by the World Cup schedule.

World Cup or KCSE exams? Junior Starlets face tough choices after historic achievement
A number of Junior Starlets players face a huge dilemma as they will be required to sit KCSE exams at a time when the FIFA U17 World Cup will be taking place in the Dominican Republic.
“The council would wish to encourage the players to keep preparing for the examinations as they train for the World Cup tournament to enable them to sit for the exam as soon as they get back.
“We appeal to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports to consider making travel arrangements for the candidates to be back at their respective schools as soon as their active participation in the tournament ends.”
The effected players are Christine Adhiambo and Velma Awuor, who both study at Nyakacha Girls, Wiyeta Girls duo of Velma Abwire and Lorine Ilavonga, Quinter Adhiambo of St Alfred Alara, Rebecca Adato (Dagoretti Mixed), Claire Meries (Kobala Secondary) and Marion Serenge of Arch Bishop Njega Girls.
