Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will have to find another reliable local-based player in a key defensive position after the country’s first-choice secured a dream move abroad.
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will have to look at other options in defence for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) after one of his key players left Kenya.
The CHAN 2024 tournament is set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August and there is pressure to deliver on home soil for Harambee Stars.
Kenya are in a tough Group A that also includes Morocco, DR Congo, Angola and Zambia but they have no option other than securing passage to the next round and to do that, McCarthy will need the best players in the squad.

Ronney Onyango miss for Benni McCarthy
However, the South African legend will now have to do it without Ronney Onyango, who has secured a transfer to Europe, following his move to Norwegian second-tier side Sogndal FC this weekend.
With the CHAN tournament primarily for players who play in their domestic leagues, Onyango’s departure robs McCarthy of a key player as the right-back has been one of the most reliable and consistent players for both Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars.
The defender has ended his spell with Gor Mahia after a successful spell that yielded two league titles and brings to an end a back and fort between him and the club regarding his future.

AFC Leopards chairman identifies what ails Ingwe as he rues missed chances in ‘easy match’ against Gor Mahia
AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has singled out one area that is letting them down which he blames for their inability to win Sunday’s Mashemeji derby.
Onyango turned down a move to Tanzanian side Singida Big Stars in January after the two clubs had agreed a transfer fee, and even part of it paid to Gor Mahia, which soured his relationship with the record Kenyan champions.
Now, he will begin a new chapter in Europe, leaving McCarthy and his technical team with the hard task of finding a reliable local-based right-back for the CHAN 2024 tournament.
