Benni McCarthy urged to restructure Harambee Stars for CHAN after World Cup setback

Former Kenyan international Boniface Ambani has urged Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy to have more local players in his upcoming selections with CHAN in mind.

Former Kenyan international Boniface Ambani has called on Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy to shift focus toward restructuring the team for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following Kenya’s slim chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This appeal comes in the wake of Kenya’s 2-1 loss to Gabon at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, a result that leaves the national team with a mountain to climb in the World Cup qualifiers.

While Kenya can still mathematically qualify by winning all four of their remaining games, their fate is no longer in their hands as both Gabon and Ivory Coast would need to suffer drastic setbacks.

Given the odds, Ambani believes that Kenya's World Cup dream is effectively over and has advised McCarthy to start rebuilding with CHAN in mind.

“To be realistic, we just have to accept the situation and focus on building the team for CHAN,” Ambani told Citizen TV.

“The best approach for the coach would be to concentrate on local talent, scouting the best players from the local league to create a solid foundation.”

Unlike the World Cup qualifiers, CHAN—set for August, to be jointly hosted by Kenya Uganda and Tanzania—exclusively features players from domestic leagues.

This presents a challenge for McCarthy, whose current squad is dominated by foreign-based players.

Only Mohammed Bajaber, Stanley Omondi, Ian Otieno, Ronney Onyango, and Manzur Okwaro meet the tournament’s eligibility criteria.

If Harambee Stars are to mount a serious challenge at CHAN, McCarthy will need to overhaul his squad, bringing in more Kenya-based players and integrating them into his tactical setup in the upcoming qualifiers.

Beyond squad restructuring, Ambani also critiqued McCarthy’s tactical decisions in the loss to Gabon. The former Harambee Stars striker pointed to the team’s inability to convert chances, a recurring issue from their previous match against Gambia.

“Benni, being a former striker, understands what needs to be done with the team. Looking at the last match against Gambia, we had several scoring chances but didn’t capitalize on them. The same issue happened again against Gabon,” Ambani noted.

He further suggested that McCarthy and his technical bench might have succumbed to fan pressure when making team selections.

“It would have been wiser to stick with the squad used against Gambia and introduce the same substitutions for firepower. On social media, many people were saying that the second-half team from Gambia should have started, and when I got to the stadium, I saw that same sentiment reflected," he noted.

"However, as a coach, it’s crucial not to give in to fan pressure but to stick to a clear game plan. Depth on the bench is important, and the impact players from the second half in Gambia could have made a difference. Unfortunately, we lost at home despite fighting hard, but this is a learning experience for Benni in his first time.”

With CHAN now the only major tournament left on Kenya’s calendar, McCarthy has the opportunity to rebuild the squad using local talent.

The next few months will be crucial as McCarthy decides on his approach, balancing the remaining World Cup qualifiers with preparations for CHAN.
