Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has distanced himself from suspended goalkeeper Patrick Matasi amid match-fixing allegations.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has expressed relief that his tenure has remained untouched by the storm surrounding suspended goalkeeper Patrick Matasi.

The Kakamega Homeboyz shot stopper is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in match-fixing.

Matasi, once a stalwart in former Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat's squad, saw his fortunes plummet after a string of shaky performances culminated in a 4-1 thrashing by Cameroon during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in 2024.

Following the defeat, the Kakamega Homeboyz shot-stopper was dropped from the national team, a move that seemed to foreshadow his further fall from grace.

The scandal erupted recently when a video surfaced online showing a man, believed to be Matasi, receiving suspicious instructions from an unidentified individual, allegedly about manipulating match outcomes.

The video ignited widespread outrage and intensified scrutiny over Matasi's prior performances.

When asked about the ongoing saga, McCarthy made it clear he had no sympathy for the embattled goalkeeper.

“There is no place for people like that in our sport and I am glad I never got to cross paths with this player and he never got to play for me as well, so good luck to him,” McCarthy said, as quoted by Nation Sports.

On March 27, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) provisionally suspended Matasi for 90 days while investigations continue.

While the FKF is yet to announce a final verdict, McCarthy has already reached his own.

“For me, I have no sympathy, whatever punishment comes, and I hope the authorities are going after the people that got this player to do that to begin with because we do not need these kinds of people in our sport…I am just glad I wasn’t the coach who played this goalkeeper,” he emphasized.

As Kenya looks to rebuild and strengthen its footballing reputation, McCarthy’s zero-tolerance stance signals a clear message of integrity comes first.

For Patrick Matasi, his once-bright Harambee Stars career now hangs in the balance.
