Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed what he looks for in a player for his squad.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has shed light on the selection criteria for the Kenyan national football team.

The South African football legend, who previously served on Manchester United’s coaching staff, has been tasked with leading Kenya through the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Kenya will co-host both tournaments alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

McCarthy Opens Up on Player Selection

In an interview with NTV, McCarthy offered insight into what it takes for a player to make it into his final Harambee Stars squad.

"I don’t think it’s a question of being brave. My coaching team and I assess players during training because we’ve played the game ourselves," McCarthy explained.

"It’s refreshing when a coach comes in and says, ‘I don’t care who you are — you have to show me what you can do on the training pitch.’"

The former UEFA Champions League winner emphasized performance over reputation.

"If I see flames from a player, whether they’ve played before or not, they’ll play for me. I’m drawn to players who show something special, regardless of experience."

Elaborating on what "flames" mean to him, McCarthy stated, "I love players who understand the game and our style of play, how we press, how they adapt, and who go out on the pitch fearless. They’re not intimidated by names like Michael Olunga, Richard Odada, or Teddy Akumu. Instead, they’re eager to shine because they believe in their ability."

"We saw players who worked exceptionally hard and made complex things look simple. That’s exactly how we want to play the game," he added.

Since taking over, McCarthy has already guided the national team through two key matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Under his leadership, Harambee Stars produced a spirited 3-3 comeback against Gambia during the March international break before narrowly losing 2-1 to Gabon.

McCarthy's 23-man squad featured a healthy blend of local talent, such as Kenya Police midfielder Mohammed Bajaber, and internationally based stars, including captain Michael Olunga.

Both players repaid McCarthy’s faith with goals as Olunga opened the scoring against Gambia, while Bajaber added the crucial second.

With McCarthy at the helm, Harambee Stars appear to be building a competitive and exciting squad ahead of the highly anticipated 2024 CHAN and 2027 AFCON campaigns.
