Benni McCarthy has discussed the stressful challenge of selecting a squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), highlighting difficulties in scouting local talent.

Benni McCarthy has opened up about one of the major challenges he is facing as he looks to select a formidable squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The continental showpiece is scheduled for August 2 to 30 and will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Kenya being among the hosts means the players have to make an impact in their matches.

CHAN is only for local-based players and Benni McCarthy admitted that scouting for talent has been hectic but his team will not relent until they find what they want.

He explained that most of the Kenyan Premier League matches happen over the weekend and it is difficult for him and his team to avail themselves for all the matches.

However, he pointed out that they have a very helpful analyst who has been very instrumental in helping them find talent.

“It’s a little bit difficult because you can't attend most of the games since they are played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, around the same time. So, we kind of have to just pick which games are probably worth watching. So, then we'll go and watch them,” Benni McCarthy shared during an interview on NTV’s Sport On.

“But then we've got an extremely busy analyst, he then gets footage from all the other games and then we kind of try and identify what but I've also asked the members from the federation if they could facilitate an opportunity for us to also go and work with the clubs.”

Benni McCarthy revealed that he now wants to form healthy relationships with coaches of the local clubs so they can give updates on promising players.

The former Manchester United attacking coach revealed that they will also get an opportunity to go visit clubs during their training periods and identify players who would benefit from the training camps.

“We also want to go watch some training sessions at clubs because sometimes you can't go to every game. If you have an understanding and a relationship with the clubs, you can go and watch training matches, and players training at the clubs and speak to the coaches,” Benni McCarthy said.

“The coaches will give you an understanding of players where they at and how and I think that's how you gather your information and then eventually it's about us having mini camps where we invite a handful of players every single time and then we watch and we see what we can do.”

He added that the main goal for CHAN will be to win, the main reason behind the rigorous process to select players who would ensure that dream becomes a reality.

The South African football legend revealed that the process is a struggle and there are many sacrifices they have to make but it is all for a good course.

He admitted that they want players who are ready to go through the difficult process with them. Benni McCarthy warned that he would not tolerate players who do have an eye for success.

“So yeah it's a process, it's stressful, it's hard but I think it's also good because it gives the local players an opportunity and a platform to play at the highest level. So you're going to want to be part of that chance squad so I hope from now until the end of the season we hope that the players will really push to make an impression so that you can be part of that final squad that will represent Kenya at CHAN,” Benni McCarthy added.

“There’s only one goal for us and that is to go all the way. We know it's very hard to achieve success, it's hard to win anything in life but if you don't think you can do it, if your belief is not strong then you shouldn't be in the position that you are.”

Kenya has been pooled in Group A, referred to as the group of death alongside Morocco, Angola, DR Congo and Zambia.

Under Benni McCarthy, Harambee Stars have played two matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They played against the Gambia where they drew 3-3 in an away match before losing 2-1 to Gabon at home in a match played at the Nyayo National Stadium.
