Former South Africa striker Benni McCarthy has been heavily linked with the Harambee Stars job but is it a ‘done deal’ as has been widely reported?

South African legend Benni McCarthy is reportedly far from agreeing terms with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over the Harambee Stars job.

McCarthy has been widely reported to have sealed a deal with FKF to replace Engin Firat as the next Kenya national team coach with the former striker said to have agreed a two-year deal that would see him come with one assistant coach.

However, reports in South Africa claim McCarthy is far from taking the Harambee Stars job as he is leaving his options open amid interest from the MLS, Europe and even South Africa, where Cape Town City, the team that gave him his first job as head coach, are currently in the hunt for a new tactician.

“Right now, Benni has not committed himself to any job,” a source close to the former FC Porto, Ajax and Blackburn Rovers striker told South African outlet KickOff.

“He wants to keep his options open because he wants to make sure that he takes up the right next challenge.”

McCarthy is among the over 20 candidates reported to have applied for the Harambee Stars job with a team, lead by FKF vice president McDonald Mariga, conducting the interviews but the ex-Manchester United coach was said to have been settled on with his unveiling to be take place before January 10.

However, FKF has not commented on the matter yet even as the said date has approached and it seems there is still some work to be done before a new coach is unveiled.

McCarthy has openly expressed his desire to return to the dugout as head coach since leaving United last June at the expiring of his contract, following a two-year spell as the club’s attacking coach.

“I think I’m itching to get back but it must be the right project for me,” McCarthy told South Africa’s Metro FM last December.

“I don’t wanna go into another situation I had with AmaZulu, where you do exceptionally well and then you’re kind of being held back instead of you pushing to take things further.

“So, I want a club that’s established, that knows what they want and where they want to see themselves in the next two, three seasons.”

South Africa’s all-time top scorer would be taking over the national team for the first time if he lands the Harambee Stars job.
