Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has come under criticism for his 'wastefulness' especially in Benni McCarthy's first two games in charge against Gambia and Gabon.
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has given his verdict on captain Michael Olunga's future with the national side.
Olunga has recently come under fire from a section of Kenyan fans despite his consistent presence and contributions to the national team.
Olunga, who plies his trade at Qatari side Al Duhail, has been a central figure in Kenya’s attacking lineup.
However, a string of missed chances during Kenya’s March international break fixtures has reignited calls for his benching, with fans citing a dip in form and demanding changes in the frontline.

In an interview with NTV, McCarthy dismissed the criticism, emphasizing Olunga’s quality and role in his tactical setup.
“We want to play front-forward football, and when we have the ball, we want to control the game. We want to play and move so that we can create space for ourselves, because we have got players that are deadly. You give them an opportunity, they will score goals,” said McCarthy.
The former Bafana Bafana striker did not mince his words when it came to Olunga’s recent performances,
“The captain Michael Olunga, he is one of the best finishers you can get in a game, simple. I know he receives a lot of bad reviews from people, but if you train with him, then you will understand,” he explained.

Obiero, who arrived in the Rising Stars camp earlier this week, will be hoping to make the final 21-man squad for the upcoming tournament.
“I don’t understand why so much hate comes his way. For someone that has coached at the highest level, it’s once in a blue moon that you find a player of this caliber and we have got one in our team. So, of course, he will always be a priority for us.”
McCarthy added that Olunga’s leadership qualities, alongside his proven goal-scoring ability, make him indispensable.
“Other players will have to show more if they want to take him out. He is a fantastic leader and a fantastic scorer," he added.

Why Shujaa face World Sevens Series relegation despite reaching cup final in Singapore
Kenya Sevens had an impressive Singapore Sevens leg, where they reached the cup final, but that was not enough as they still stare at the prospect of World Sevens Series relegation.
His goal against Gabon brought his international tally to 32 goals, placing him just three shy of Kenya’s all-time top scorer William Ouma, who holds the record at 35 goals.
Olunga also trails Dennis Oliech (34 goals) and Elijah Lidonde (33 goals) on the prestigious list.
While the debate around his form continues among fans, McCarthy’s firm stance signals that the Harambee Stars captain remains central to his vision moving forward.
