The FKF official has shed light on the search for a new Harambee Stars coach after it was reported that South African legend Benni McCarthy has landed the job.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acting Chief Executive Officer Patrick Korir has moved to quell reports that South African legend Benni McCarthy is set to become Harambee Stars coach.

McCarthy was reported last week to have been identified as the man to take over from Engin Firat, who resigned early this month, with the former Manchester United attacking coach reportedly set to be unveiled in January.

Korir, however, claims a decision has not been made yet on who will take over as the national team coach, but admitted that McCarthy is among candidates who have expressed an interest in the job.

"We have received many CVs, close to 20, from candidates who want to coach the Kenyan national team,” Korir told Al-Qahera News.

"Benni McCarthy is one of the coaches who applied for the job through his agent, and the technical committee is still studying them.

"The technical committee is looking for the best person suitable for the vacant position. This is entirely up to them. I will wait until they reach my office with their preferred candidate, once the process is completed.”

The FKF technical committee tasked with identifying the new Harambee Stars coach is led by the federation’s vice president McDonald Mariga and had been reported to have already settled on McCarthy.

“It’s a done deal—Benni will be the new Kenya coach,” a source from South Africa told Mozzartsport.

“He’s excited about the challenge, especially since this is his first time managing a national team. His unveiling should happen around early January, but the exact date will be confirmed soon.”

McCarthy’s last job was at Premier League side Manchester United, where he worked as the club’s attacking coach from July 2022 to June 2024.

He is South Africa’s all-time top scorer and regarded as one of the best young coaches on the continent following his spells at Cape Town City and AmaZulu.

The Bafana Bafana legend won the MTN8 with Cape Town City in 2018, before leading AmaZulu to second place in the league, their best-ever, after which he guided them to the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time in the club’s history.
