African legends Benni McCarthy, Aliou Cisse and Rigobert Song all experienced unconvincing starts in their new jobs during the just-concluded World Cup qualifiers.

African football legends Benni McCarthy, Aliou Cisse and Rigobert Song started new jobs as national team coaches on the continent during this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

McCarthy began his reign as Kenya national team coach while Cisse took charge of Libya for the first time as Song went in the dugout for the first time as Central Africa Republic coach.

As fate would have it, the three African legends had identical records with each of their teams recording a draw and loss on matchday five and six of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

South African legend Benni McCarthy led Harambee Stars for the first time when they played away to The Gambia on March 20.

Harambee Stars were on the brink of defeat when The Gambia took a 2-0 lead but they fought back to draw 2-2 before the home side went ahead again after which Kenya scored in the last minute of the game for 3-3.

McCarthy’s first home match took place on Sunday March 23 when Kenya faced Gabon at a full Nyayo Stadium but his team lost 2-1 when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice either side of the two halves with Michael Olunga pulling one back.

Harambee Stars are now all but out of contention for a World Cup place as they have six points in Group F with Ivory Coast on 16, Gabon on 15 and Burundi on 10 with four matches remaining.

Senegal legend Aliou Cisse started work as the new coach of Libya on Thursday March 20 when his team played at home to Angola, drawing 1-1.

Libya were on course to win the match but Angola equalised in time added on to deny Cisse a winning start and any hopes of writing those wrongs on Tuesday were dashed away to Cameroon as they suffered a 3-1 loss to the Indomitable Lions.

The five points dropped have seen Libya slip to third in their World Cup qualifying group with eight points, just one ahead of Angola, but Cape Verde lead Group D with 13 points followed by Cameroon on 12.

Cameroon legend Rigobert Song started his reign as coach of the Central African Republic with a chastening 4-1 home loss to Madagascar on Wednesday March 19 and followed it up with a goalless draw away to Mali on Monday.

That left Song’s team five points behind leaders Madagascar, who have 10 points, while Mali have nine points, with five games to go.
