Benjamin Mendy has disclosed the close friends among the Manchester City squad who helped him financially when his wages were stopped following a sexual assualt trial.

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has opened up about the financial support he received from his team-mates during his legal battles.

After being charged with rape and sexual assault in 2021, Mendy’s wages, estimated at £500,000 per month, were halted by the club, leaving him in a precarious financial situation.

In testimony during an employment tribunal, Mendy disclosed that players Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez stepped in to help him cover his legal fees and support his family during this challenging period.

“Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez all lent me money to help me try and pay my legal fees and support my family,” Mendy stated.

Mendy’s legal troubles forced him to sell his Cheshire home to manage expenses, including child support payments.

He expressed feelings of guilt over his financial struggles, stating, “I struggled to pay my child support; I felt awful.” His agent, Meissa N'diaye, also contributed to his legal fees as Mendy navigated the complexities of his trial.

The French international was acquitted of all charges in July 2023 but is now involved in a tribunal claiming “unauthorised deductions” from his wages.

Mendy’s contract included significant bonuses linked to his participation in matches, further complicating the financial implications of his situation.

In court documents, Mendy noted that Manchester City’s then chief football operating officer, Omar Berrada, had assured him that his unpaid wages would be issued once he was cleared of the allegations.

However, Mendy's attempts to seek confirmation from Berrada went unanswered, and the club later denied making such guarantees.

After his acquittal, Mendy reached out to Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Manchester City's chairman, but received no response regarding his wages.

The club maintained that they were not obligated to continue payments due to Mendy’s inability to fulfil his player duties because of his bail conditions and FA suspension.

Now signed with French Ligue 2 club Lorient, Mendy’s experience highlights the challenges athletes can face off the pitch, especially during legal disputes.

His revelations about the support from his teammates underscore the camaraderie that can exist among players, even in toughest times.
