Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out of Euro 2024 due to an ankle injury that has not healed in time, with Blaugrana teammate Robert Lewandowski also now a major doubt for Poland after limping out of a warm-up friendly.

De Jong out of Euro 2024

The 27-year-old midfielder sustained the injury after a collision with Fede Valverde during El Clasico nearly two months ago. Despite initial hopes for recovery, it was confirmed on Monday night that de Jong will not be able to participate in the tournament.

The Dutch national team and de Jong himself confirmed the news, with the midfielder expressing deep sorrow at missing out. He stated that he would now support the team as a fan. De Jong's ankle issues have been recurring, with injuries dating back to September and February, making this season particularly challenging for him.

Lewandowski's injury concerns Poland fans

Barcelona and Poland forward Robert Lewandowski has also cast doubt on his participation in Euro 2024 after leaving the pitch injured less than a week before the tournament's start. The 35-year-old suffered a muscle injury against Turkey, forcing him to exit the match in the 30th minute after assisting Karol Swiderski for the opener.

Lewandowski's injury came with a grim expression and noticeable limp, raising concerns about his availability for Poland’s opening match against the Czech Republic in six days. The extent of his injury remains unknown, but it appears likely he will miss at least one, if not all, of Poland’s group stage matches. This injury follows a recent struggle with an ankle problem at Barcelona earlier this season, adding to the worries of both Poland and Barcelona supporters.
