Sekhukhune United defender Shaun Mogaila faces court following a tragic accident involving a young child.

South Africa and Sekhukhune United defender Shaun Mogaila is set to make his first appearance in the Thembisa Magistrates’ Court on Friday following his arrest on charges of alleged culpable homicide.

This court appearance comes after Mogaila was involved in a tragic road accident on Andrew Mapheto Road in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni, that claimed the life of a nine-year-old child.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed the details.

“A female driver was transporting her nine-year-old daughter, who succumbed to injuries and was declared dead on the scene, and a 13-year-old who sustained serious injuries and was transported to Tembisa Tertiary Hospital," he said as per News24.

The crash occurred when Mogaila’s black BMW collided with a Hyundai i10, driven by the mother with her two young passengers on board.

According to the authorities, Mogaila, who allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident, turned himself in to the Rabie Ridge Police Station on Wednesday afternoon.

This action took place hours after the accident that has now led to the involvement of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and an intensive police investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

The 29-year-old footballer, known for his intense and tenacious playing style as a right-back and right winger, joined Sekhukhune United from Shauwn Mkhize’s Royal AM in the recent transfer window.

His arrest has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s soccer community, especially given his prominence on the field and recent appearances with the Limpopo team.

Mogaila had notably played a key role in Sekhukhune United’s recent 2-0 victory over Richards Bay FC on Tuesday night, just one day before the fatal incident.

In a statement released by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, it was revealed that suspected illicit substances, including cocaine, edibles, and luxury Don Julio tequila bottles, were discovered inside Mogaila’s vehicle.

“We are continuing with our investigations and will conduct a blood test to confirm if there were any substances that may have impaired his driving,” said Makgato, adding that the probe would be thorough given the severe implications of the crash.

Although Mogaila remains in police custody ahead of his court appearance, he is expected to apply for bail during Friday’s proceedings.

Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the NPA, confirmed the upcoming hearing: “The accused will make his first court appearance on Friday, where we anticipate a formal bail application.”

The charge of culpable homicide that Mogaila faces is a serious one in South Africa, often carrying significant penalties, especially in cases involving hit-and-run incidents and fatalities.

The fatal accident has left many in the community and among fans mourning the loss of the young girl.

Meanwhile, the 13-year-old passenger, who sustained severe injuries in the collision, continues to receive medical treatment at Tembisa Tertiary Hospital, adding further tragedy to the incident.

Sekhukhune United have yet to release an official statement regarding Mogaila’s arrest though the football fraternity and fans are eagerly waiting to hear the club’s position on the matter.
