Insult to injury for Everton as they lost 4-0 to Aston Villa after losing Alex Iwobi to a knock.

Aston Villa made up for their embarrassing defeat to Newcastle last season by running riot against Everton, beating them 4-0.

How it happened

Aston Villa were determined to bounce back from a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Newcastle away at St James Park last season, and their start to this match showed their intent.

They created chance after chance in the early exchanges before finally breaching Jordan Pickford’s goal in the 18th minute of the game when John McGinn was left unmarked at the front post. Leon Bailey cut the ball back into space, and the Scotsman pounced on it, lifting it up and away from the goalkeeper.

Unai Emery’s side continued to apply pressure and soon had the chance to make it two from the penalty spot when a wayward attempt at punching the ball by Pickford brushed against Ollie Watkins.

The referee gave a penalty, and VAR upheld the decision. Douglas Luis stepped up to take the spot-kick, and he made no mistake, firing past the outstretched English shot-stopper.

The Villans continued the second half the way they ended the first and soon made it three in the 51st minute of the game thanks to a Leon Bailey strike.

Just before the goal, Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi was substituted from the game after seemingly picking up a knock and was replaced by Neal Maupay.

Emery made wholesale substitutions, and one of the fresh legs, John Duran, made it four in the 74th minute of the game, robbing a defender to free himself into a 1v1 situation with Jordan Pickford.
