Darren Ferguson, son of legendary Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, is facing criticism for denying Everton star Ashley Young a historic moment.

Peterborough coach Darren Ferguson has had to defend his decision not to bring on youngster Tyler Young during his team’s FA Cup clash against Everton on Thursday night.

Fans were waiting to witness history during the cup tie when Peterborough faced Everton at Goodison Park as Tyler would have played against his father Ashely Young, the former Manchester United captain, now turning out for the Toffees.

Ashley, 39, and Tyler, 18, would have been the first father and son to play against each other in the 154 years of the FA Cup had they been involved in Thursday’s match, which Everton won 2-0 to proceed to the next round.

However, Ferguson, the son of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, opted to start Tyler on the bench as the English League One side Peterborough sought to pull off a shock in the competition known to produce major upsets.

But there was no surprising result and also no history as Ashley, who had also started on the bench, came on but his son was an unused substitute, denying supporters and the Young family a special moment.

Ferguson has come under fire for his decision to leave Tyler on the bench when his team appeared subdued by the Premier League club but he insists he did the right thing.

“It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench but I've got to do what I think is best for the team,” said Ferguson as quoted by the Dailymail.

“As much as I wanted Tyler to get on, if the game had been 2-0 at that point, I would've put him on, but at 1-0, I had to get a forward on. I've got to try and get something out of the game and do what is best for my team.

“One of their [Everton] players had a pop at me which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case.”

However, while there was clomour for Tyler to come on, Ferguson would perhaps be vindicated by the fact that the teenager is not yet a regular at Peterborough.

He has only made one professional appearance, which came as a substitute in the EFL Trophy against Stevenage in October, and had not made the matchday squad for Peterborough’s last 14 matches prior to Thursday’s tie.
