I felt proud — Ashleigh Plumptre relives Super Falcons epic FIFAWWC clash vs England
It was a dream come true for Ashleigh Plumptre when the Nigeria Super Falcons battled the country of her birth, England, at the FIFAWWC.
Plumptre and Super Falcons
The talented defender was cleared in December 2021 by the world football governing body, FIFA, to play for Nigeria in December 2021.
Since she made her debut back in February 2022 against Ivory Coast, the former Leicester City star has become one of the most reliable players in the Nigeria Super Falcons.
She was one of the players who made the country proud at the recently finished FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIFAWWC, in New Zealand and Australia.
The defender proved to be a reliable as the Super Falcons made history for Africa alongside South Africa and Morocco.
Plumptre played all the matches as the Falcons made it to the knockout stage at the FIFAWWC.
Nigeria’s journey to the round of 16 was against all odds after being drawn in a group that included co-hosts Australia and Canada, the Olympic champions.
The Falcons made it out of that group without defeat before bowing out in the first round of the knockout stage against European champions England.
Despite a painful exit after a dominant and brace performance against the Lionesses, Plumptre and her defensive partners helped Nigeria keep three clean sheets in four matches at the FIFAWWC for the first time.
On England
Following an impressive display against the country of her birth which she relived during an appearance on the mixed-up podcast as monitored by Pulse Sports, Plumptre was asked again about the decision to play for Nigeria.
According to her, it was a need to discover heritage as she has pointed out on several occasions.
The defender noted that the game against the Lionesses proved to her she made the right decision.
“This is a decision that i wanted to take to discover more about my heritage,” she said on the podcast.
“Even after the world cup, people were saying ‘do you wish that you could change back to England now?’ and i am like ‘these people just don’t understand the reason, even though i have said it so many times.”
Plumptre added that the FIFAWWC battle against England showed he she’s where she needed to be.
“They are not really listening to me in terms of the reason i joined Nigeria in the first place,” she added.
“When i finished that game against England. I honestly felt like i was exactly where i was meant to be.”
