Mikel Arteta's Arsenal have an opportunity to progress to the next stage of the Champions League but Real Madrid and their European pedigree stand in their way.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has outlined his side’s strategy to nullify Real Madrid’s famous Champions League comebacks ahead of their second-leg quarter-final clash at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The Gunners head into the return fixture as strong favorites to progress to the next round following an emphatic 3-0 win in the first leg at the Emirates last Tuesday.

A brace from Declan Rice via set-pieces and a clinical strike from Mikel Merino gave Arsenal a commanding advantage.

Despite this, Real Madrid’s storied history in the Champions League, particularly their reputation for dramatic turnarounds, remains a source of hope for the Spanish giants.

Arteta remains optimistic that his side can hold firm and finish the job in Madrid.

Remarkably, Arsenal boasts a strong historical record against the 15-time European champions, having never lost to Real Madrid in their previous three meetings in Europe’s elite competition.

Their most notable encounter came in the 2005/06 Round of 16, where the Gunners secured a 1-0 aggregate win, courtesy of a famous away victory at the Bernabeu and a goalless draw at the Emirates.

With a three-goal cushion, Arteta is confident in executing his tactical blueprint to preserve that unbeaten streak.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Arsenal boss revealed how his side intends to stay in control and prevent another chapter in Madrid’s comeback legacy.

"I understand it’s part of their history, and they have every right to believe in these scenarios. Ours is very different — it’s about mindset, preparation, and making sure we take the game to places that favour us," Arteta said via Hayters TV.

"If we manage to dictate those crucial aspects, then we give ourselves a very good chance of winning."

Real Madrid’s Comeback Pedigree

Inside the Real Madrid camp, there’s been growing optimism about another possible miracle under the lights of the Bernabeu. And Arteta knows they have the pedigree to believe.

Real Madrid’s legacy of comebacks is legendary. Most notably, in 2022, they overturned a deficit against Manchester City in the semi-finals, a tie that saw them trailing 4-3 from the first leg before Riyad Mahrez appeared to seal the deal with a goal at the Bernabeu.

However, in a dramatic twist, late goals from Rodrygo and a Karim Benzema penalty in extra time sent Madrid through with a 6-5 aggregate victory.

They went on to defeat Liverpool 1-0 in the final to clinch their 14th European title.

That season, they also pulled off stirring comebacks against both PSG and Chelsea, proving their resilience and belief under pressure.

To reach the semi-finals this time, Real Madrid will need another such miracle and Arsenal will need to be at their best to stop it.
