Arsenal host Real Madrid in a blockbuster UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash on Tuesday night and here is everything you need to know about the match.

Arsenal are set for their biggest match of the season so far when they host Spanish giants Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

The Gunners, who are looking for their maiden European crown, have their work cut out against the 15-time winners, who always find a way when it comes to this competition.

Madrid are in the quarter-final following a post-match penalty shootout win over city rivals Atletico Madrid while Arsenal annihilated Dutch side PSV 9-3 on aggregate in the Last 16.

Arsenal vs Real Madrid Preview

Arsenal will face Real Madrid competitively for the first time since 2006.

However, both sides did not have a fruitful weekend when Arsenal drew 1-1 with Everton on Saturday to kill off any slim hopes they had of winning the Premier League title while Real Madrid’s dream of retaining their La Liga crown suffered a setback after losing 2-1 to Valencia a few hours later.

The Champions League clash therefore adds pressure on both sides to secure a win but it will not be straightforward given the history of the two teams.

This will just be the third competitive meeting between Arsenal and Madrid, and the first time Los Blancos play at the iconic Emirates Stadium, as their last clash was during the 2005-06 season when the Gunners went all the way to the final before losing to Barcelona.

It was a last-16 clash that legendary forward Thierry Henry scored the lone goal as Arsenal won 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu before keeping the Galacticos of Madrid at bay in the return leg at Highbury to secure a 1-0 aggregate win and make it to the quarter-final.

Whether they will manage to do that again against a star-studded Madrid team on Tuesday remains to be seen but coach Mikel Arteta has to find a way.

Mikel Arteta will be happy that Bukayo Saka has now got enough minutes in his legs after returning from injury recently, and he will start alongside the likes of Mikel Merino, Thomas Partey, Jurrien Timber, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel Martinelli.

However, the Gunners will be without Gabriel Jesus (knee), Kai Havertz (hamstring), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) and Gabriel Magalhaes (hamstring), all nursing injuries, while versatile defender Riccardo Calafiori and winger Raheem Sterling are suspended.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid will be happy that Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos, Antonio Rudiger and Vinicius Junior escaped punishment and will be available on Tuesday while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will need to pass a late fitness test and if he cannot play, he has an able deputy in Andriy Lunin.

However, coach Carlo Ancelotti will be without Frenchman Aurelien Tchouameni, who is suspended, while Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao are out for the season with knee problems as Ferland Mendy also misses out with a muscle issue.
