Arsenal vs Man City: Arsenal breaks eight years Premier League drought against the Citizens

Stephen Oladehinde 18:37 - 08.10.2023

Arsenal finally breaks an eight-year curse by defeating Pep Guardiola’s side Manchester City to continue their Premier League unbeaten run.

The Gunners have always found it difficult against Manchester City in previous years and have failed to defeat them in the Premier League since 2015.

They secured a hard-earned victory over the Citizens, defeating them 1-0 in the Super Sunday clash.

Gabriel Matinelli’s late strike which deflated off a Man City player was enough to seal the victory over last season's Premier League Champions.

As it happened

Two changes were made from the Gunners' previous Premier League game, a 4-0 victory against Bournemouth.

Kai Havertz drops to the bench, as Leandro Trossard and Jorginho start while Gabriel Martinelli is available as a substitute following his recent hamstring issue.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola made three changes following his side's first league defeat of the season at Wolves last week.

Bernardo Silva and Rico Lewis started while Josko Gvardiol also came in for Manuel Akanji. Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku move to the bench, where they are joined by the returning John Stones.

The game started and both teams tried controlling the possession but could not create any chance to open the scoring.

At some point, Arsenal looked like a dangerous team to get the first goal but could not find an opening till the referee blew the whistle for halftime.

Both teams came out for the second half and continued from where they left off. Arsenal got a half chance through substitute Gabriel Martinelli but his effort went straight to the hands of Ederson.

Arsenal continued to look more dangerous towards the end of the game and got the deserving goal.

Gabriel Martinelli, the half-time substitute, is teed up on the edge of the box by Kai Havertz and his shot takes a huge deflection off Nathan Ake's head to fly into the back of the net.

The Gunners finally got the best of Manchester City, securing a 1-0 victory after an eight-year drought.
