Arsenal sporting director Edu has taken the decision to leave the club, five years since taking the role.

The sporting director has been away in Brazil on personal matters and arrived back late last week.

According to Sky Sports, the Brazilian has been under consideration for a role with Evangelos Marinakis' group of clubs. They currently include Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave and, in the future, potentially a fourth club they are looking to buy in Europe.

It is unclear yet whether that is a reason Edu has made this decision. This is a major blow to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. Edu was responsible for the Gunners signing highly-rated talents like Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard as the team reshaped its transfer strategy in 2019.

The 42-year-old is also credited for supporting the offloading of troubled stars such as Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who were considered to be part of a failed past. More details are expected to emerge in the next 24 hours.
