Arsenal are reportedly close to making their second summer acquisition.

Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement with Real Sociedad to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino.

Merino, 28, is a Premier League-experienced midfielder, having spent time in the English top flight in the 2017/18 season on loan from Dortmund and Newcastle.

He has been at Real Sociedad since 2019, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in LALIGA. He is now set to return to the Premier League, with the North London giants, Arsenal, close to sealing a permanent transfer.

The details

After completing the signing of centre-back Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, Arsenal set out to tick the next position that needs addressing on their transfer list, central midfield.

They identified Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino as an ideal target and immediately went into negotiations for him. According to a report from Relevo, they have reached an agreement on a transfer fee in excess of €30 million and are close to finalising the deal.

Merino was one of the Spanish contingents at the European Championship, and he comes highly rated. He is expected to complete a midfield triumvirate with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, taking up roles the Granit Xhaka interpreted to great success in the 2022/23 campaign.

The midfielder was a transfer target for Barcelona, and they were reported to have reached an agreement on personal terms with him. However, their limited finances forced them to prioritise other players.

La Reale are said to have identified a replacement in Paris Saint-Germain’s Carlos Soler, who was previously on the books of Valencia.
