Al Hilal Omdurman lost to APR FC in penalties setting up an APR vs. Red Arrows final for Ksh 4 million.

Rwanda’s APR FC is set to clash with Zambia’s Red Arrows FC in the high-stakes final of the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2024 at KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

APR secured their spot in the final after a nail-biting penalty shootout victory over Al Hilal with the score settled at 5-4 in the semi-final at KMC Stadium.

Their opponent, Red Arrows FC advanced to the final after a dramatic late win, scoring twice in extra time of their semi-final match against Hay Al Wadi FC at the Azam Complex, Chamazi.

APR enters the final unbeaten in this tournament showcasing a solid defensive and strategic prowess.

In stark contrast, Red Arrows despite a heavy 5-0 loss to Al Hilal earlier in the tournament have bounced back to winning ways.

APR head coach Darco Novic has expressed immense pride in his team’s performance.

“We still have a lot of work to do because preparing for a final is very different especially after playing 120 minutes in the semi-final,” he said.

Al Hila coach Florent Ibenge reflected on their loss with a philosophical outlook.

"Football is about taking your chances and penalties can go to any team. But we are happy that we have played all these matches in the CECAFA Kagame Cup because it is preparing us for the new season," he noted.

The Blue Jewels are now set to face Hay Al Wadi in a play-off for third place on the same day as the final.

The final promises not only to be a battle of skill and strategy but also a test of endurance and mental strength.

Allasane Diarra, who earned the Man of the Match Award in Red Arrows’ semi-final, shared his thoughts on the victory.

“This was not an easy match, but we played our hearts out and made it to the final,” he said.

The stakes are high, with the champions set to receive US$30,000 (equivalent to Ksh 3.9 million), while the runner-up will claim US$20,000 (Ksh 2.6 million), and the third-placed team will take home US$10,000 (Ksh 1.3 million).

The prize money adds an extra layer of competition as the teams not only vie for regional glory but also a significant financial reward.
