The former Green Comandos midfielder received his first call up to the Harambee Stars squad for their upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifying double-header against Zimbabwe.

Tusker midfielder David Odoyo has expressed his excitement and ambitions after being called up to the Kenya national football team, Harambee Stars, for the first time ahead of their crucial AFCON 2025 qualifying double-header against Cameroon.

Odoyo, who has been a key player for Tusker over the past year, has earned his place in Engin Firat’s squad following impressive performances in the opening games of the FKF Premier League season.

Odoyo, known for his energetic box-to-box play and willingness to engage in tackles, has cemented his position in Tusker’s starting lineup since the departures of Humphrey Mieno and Rodgers Ouma.

Despite early concerns about his disciplinary record, Odoyo’s maturity and hard work have seen him grow into a reliable presence for the Brewers. His performances this season finally caught the eye of national team coach Engin Firat, leading to his first senior call-up.

In an interview with Tusker’s media team, Odoyo revealed his surprise at being selected but emphasized his readiness and determination to prove himself on the international stage.

"Being my first call-up to the national team, I am extremely grateful. It is a great (chance to gain more) experience and great exposure," Odoyo said. "I have put a lot of effort into the first four games and I hope that I will continue proving my worth moving forward."

Odoyo admitted that while the call-up was unexpected, he always believed his hard work would eventually pay off. "It has really surprised me, but I was still ready.

“I knew one day, with hard work, it would come. It is a privilege for any player to be called up to the national team. It’s a good experience, and I am happy."

Odoyo also highlighted the importance of representing the national team in boosting a player’s career prospects.

"Through the national team, it gives you exposure and chances to earn opportunities out there because most times, they prioritise national team appearances."

Now focused on his future with Harambee Stars, Odoyo has set his sights on maintaining his spot in the squad.

"Now that I have made it, I hope to continue working hard and stay committed. I cannot say anything more other than show it with my actions by being determined and working extremely hard."
