Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has opened up following his awful Premier League debut as his bid to replace Andre Onana long-term did not go to plan.

Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has reacted to his first Premier League start in what was a poor audition for a big role ahead during the Red Devil’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle.

The Turkish goalkeeper started in goal in place of Andre Onana, who was dropped by United boss Ruben Amorim for the trip to St James’ Park, after a recent spate off errors leading to goals, including two in their 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League last Thursday.

This was just his first start in the league since signing for United in the summer of 2023 but if he was supposed to be the man to replace Onana in the second leg of the Europa League match against Lyon on Thursday, Bayindir did not convince.

He conceded four goals from six shots that Newcastle had on target and struggled to keep away crosses. Further, the goalkeeper was to blame for Newcastle’s fourth goal when his pass could only find Joelinton who passed to Bruno Guimaraes to slam home the killer blow.

Bayindir was, however, still delighted with his first Premier League start for United nonetheless.

“Honored to make my PL debut for this club. Not the result we wanted, but I’ll keep pushing, keep fighting. We’ll be back stronger — keep believing,” he posted on Instagram.

United went behind in the 24th minute when Sandro Tonali slotted past Bayindir before Alejandro Garnacho equalised after 37 minutes for 1-1 at the break but errors from United defenders then handed the hosts all three points after the break.

Harvey Barnes capitalised on two defensive mistakes to score a second half brace before Guimaraes completed the rout 13 minutes from time.

United now shift focus to the quarter-final second leg match in the Europa League against Lyon on Thursday, a game they must win as this is their only route to the Champions League next season and also the remaining chance to win a trophy.

Amorim therefore needs to find the right goalkeeper for the visit of Lyon to Old Trafford but he has been handed a selection headache following the poor performance of Bayindir.
