Al Ahly defender has been sidelined for crucial Champions League matches following ACL surgery marking his second similar injury in two seasons.

Al Ahly defender Karim Fouad will miss a significant portion of the Red Devils' CAF Champions League campaign following a knee surgery he underwent on Saturday.

The 24-year-old defender suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Ahly's narrow 1-0 win over Smouha at Alexandria's Borg Stadium, where the club celebrated its Egyptian league title last season.

The injury marks a concerning repeat of last year's misfortune, which similarly sidelined Fouad, disrupting his season.

"Karim Fouad, our defender, underwent a successful knee surgery in Germany following the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he picked up last season," stated the club in a press release.

This injury recurrence could pose serious questions about Fouad's long-term fitness and role in the team's defensive lineup.

Ahmed Gaballah, Al Ahly's team doctor, provided a positive update on Fouad's condition.

"The player's condition is stable, and he will begin his rehabilitation program a few days after his return to Cairo," Gaballah said.

This rehabilitation will be crucial for Fouad, who has become an integral part of the team since joining in the summer of 2021.

During his time at Al Ahly, Fouad has contributed significantly, helping the team secure nine different titles.

Initially playing as a right back, Fouad has displayed considerable versatility and skill, particularly after stepping in for the injured left back Ali Maaloul.

Maaloul, another key player for Ahly, has been dealing with an Achilles tendon rupture, adding to the team's defensive woes.

Last season, Fouad featured in 39 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

His performance has not only highlighted his defensive capabilities but also his ability to contribute offensively. This balance has made him a valuable asset to the team, particularly in high-stakes matches.

In light of Fouad's absence, Al Ahly has been proactive in shoring up its defense. The club recently announced the signing of Moroccan left-back Yahia Attiyat Allah.

However, it is likely that Omar Kamal or Kareem El-Debes will be called upon to play at left-back during the upcoming CAF Champions League matches against Gor Mahia.

The first leg of this crucial encounter is set to take place on Sunday, September 15, hosted by Gor Mahia. The return leg will follow a week later at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.
