The list of African coaches who have won the AFCON has expanded with Emerse Fae's recent victory enriching the continent's football heritage.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) concluded with a historic moment as winning coach Emerse Fae etched his name into the records of African football history.

The 34th edition of Africa's premier football competition saw host nation Cote d'Ivoire claim their third continental title under the guidance of Fae, following a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Nigeria in Ebimpe on February 11.

At 40, Emerse Fae represents the latest addition to a prestigious list of African coaches who have masterminded their teams to AFCON glory.

His tactical acumen and leadership saw the Ivorian team bounce back from a precarious position in the group stages to dominate the tournament, culminating in a memorable win that resonated across the continent.

Fae took over the reins from Jean-Louis Gasset, leading his team with a blend of tactical insight and motivational prowess, showcasing the depth of coaching talent emerging from Africa.

Since the tournament's inception in 1957, Fae becomes the eleventh African coach to lift the trophy, joining a list of illustrious names that have shaped the course of African football.

This list includes legends like Egypt's Mourad Fahmy, Ghana's Charles Gyamfi, and Egypt's Hassan Shehata, with Gyamfi and Shehata holding the record for the most AFCON titles won by a coach.

The journey of African coaches at the helm of national teams has been marked by notable achievements.

From Abdelhamid Kermali, who led Algeria to their first continental success in 1990, to Djamel Belmadi, who secured Algeria's second title in 2019, each coach's story is a testament to the evolving landscape of African football.

Figures like Fred Osam Doudu (Ghana), Clive Barker (South Africa), and Stephen Keshi (Nigeria) have also contributed to this rich history, demonstrating the potential of African tacticians to achieve greatness on the international stage.
