According to Abel Shirima, the committee chairman tasked to oversee renovation works at the stadium, the works are progressing well.

As Ugandans grumble over the delayed refurbishment of the country’s only multipurpose sports facility in the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Tanzania is moving closer to having the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium ready.

According to Abel Shirima, the committee chairman tasked to oversee renovation works at the stadium, the works are progressing well.

“So far, we are progressing well with the facelift works, and now, we’re installing brand new equipment in all areas where there is a need to do so,” Shirima confirmed

“We are about to begin the installation of new lights after removing the old ones and painting the changing rooms, VIP and VVIP sections.”

The refurbishments on the facility would be completed by October 5th, the date CAF officials set up for their last facility inspection.

The Tanzanian government is working tirelessly to have the stadium ready for, among many things, the CAF inspection team ahead of the AFCON 2027 bid final visit and the inaugural Africa Football League tournament starting in mid-October.

African giants Simba SC and Al Ahly will face off on October 20th at the stadium in one of four quarterfinals to be played across the continent.

Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya jointly bid to host the 2027 AFCON and the Benjamin Mpaka Stadium; Namboole and the Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums in Kenya were listed as host venues for matches.

The refurbishments at Namboole, as explained by Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for the Ministry of Education and Sports, are expected to be complete by November 2023.

While in Kenya, the government handed over the renovation of their stadiums to the Kenya Defence Forces.
