Ethiopia has hosted AFCON thrice and Sudan twice, the only two nations from the CECAFA region to host the prestigious tournament.
Despite being located in North Africa, Sudan is amongst the 12 member states of the CECAFA region.
It's also important to note that Ethiopia, while being a part of the CECAFA group, is also not traditionally considered an East African country.

East Africa's more traditional members are Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
As a result, the 2027 AFCON will mark the first time in history that the tournament is hosted in East Africa, specifically in the CECAFA region, after 51 years.
