Kenya gears up for AFCON 2027 by launching major stadium renovations with the Kenya Defence Forces leading the construction efforts.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has provided a comprehensive status update on the renovations of the country's premier stadiums as Kenya continues with preparations to co-host the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

In a landmark announcement, Namwamba revealed that his ministry has officially handed over to the Ministry of Defence the responsibilities for the extensive work to revamp the sports infrastructure in the country.

In September, Kenya, alongside regional partners Uganda and Tanzania, secured the rights to host the 2027 AFCON.

At the heart of the preparations is the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), which has been tasked with executing the critical mission of upgrading and erecting four principal stadiums.

The renovation blueprint includes the refurbishment of the iconic Nyayo Stadium, Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, and the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

Moreover, the jewel in the crown is the proposed Talanta Sports Complex. Envisioned to be a 50,000-seater marvel, it will feature not only a football stadium but also world-class training pitches and an indoor arena.

Set to be erected within the Jamhuri Sports Complex in Nairobi, the Talanta Sports Complex represents a leap towards realizing Kenya's potential as a sporting powerhouse.

“Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba this afternoon held a meeting with his Kenya Defence Forces counterpart Hon Aden Duale to review the status update on the preparations to host the African Cup of Nations in 2027,” read part of the statement.

"Ministry of Youth and Sports has handed over the responsibilities to oversee the construction of the sporting infrastructure to the Ministry of Defense, which includes the refurbishment of the three main Stadia of Kasarani, Nyayo and Kipchoge Keino Stadium, as well as the construction of a 50,000 seater, completely new football only Stadium named Talanta Sports City at the Jamhuri grounds."

Critics and stakeholders alike have lauded the government's efforts, with many expressing confidence in the KDF's ability to deliver world-class facilities within the projected timelines.

The infrastructure upgrade is expected to transcend beyond merely facilitating the hosting of AFCON 2027. It is envisioned to elevate Kenya, and by extension, the region, as a formidable player on the global sports stage.

By improving these facilities, Kenya aims to attract international sporting events, training camps, and tourism, thereby contributing to the nation's economic and social fabric.

As the countdown to 2027 begins, Kenya's proactive steps towards infrastructure readiness signal the nation's resolve to deliver a memorable AFCON experience.
