With the tournament set for Morocco in December 2025, Hassan is determined to lead Egypt to glory while also eyeing qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt coach says Salah deserves AFCON title

Hassan has no doubt that Salah deserves to win AFCON, having finished as a runner-up in 2017 and 2021.

The three-time winner said, “It’s time for Salah to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy, and he deserves it. The competition is tough, but we are capable of winning it.”

The Liverpool star remains Egypt’s talisman, and with the likes of Omar Marmoush, who recently joined Manchester City, the squad is packed with talent.

Hassan was full of faith in the side saying, “Having him with us is wonderful. Everyone in the team, led by Salah, is doing their best to fulfil the hopes and ambitions of the Egyptian people.”

Egypt have been placed in Group B alongside South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe, making for a challenging but manageable path to the knockout rounds.

AFCON vs World Cup

The 58-year-old coach remains focused on both winning AFCON and qualifying for the World Cup, refusing to pick one over the other.

He also added, “The two goals are extremely important. Winning the Africa Cup of Nations after a long absence would be fantastic for the national team, especially for this outstanding generation that deserves it.”

Beyond team success, Salah is on the verge of history, needing just 12 more goals to surpass Hassan’s record of 68 goals and become Egypt’s all-time top scorer.

The coach welcomes the possibility, saying, “I wish Salah the best of luck because it benefits the national team. I hope he achieves even more. It makes me happy.”

Meanwhile, Hassan also sees a bright future for Marmoush, who has been in electric form, scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle United in February and proving himself as a worthy successor to Salah. With a mix of experience and rising stars, Hassan’s Egypt is shaping up to be a serious AFCON 2025 contender.
