Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro believes that the team is still on the right track to qualify for AFCON 2023, despite the loss to Guinea Bissau which he described as a one-off.
Profligate Super Eagles fall to Guinea Bissau
Nigeria suffered their first-ever loss to Guinea Bissau in a shock AFCON 2023 Group A qualifier, but Peseiro has called for calm from fans who are worried that the country could have another disappointing outing in the final tournament.
The Super Eagles were bested at home thanks to a goal from Troyes forward Mama Samba Balde who scored the only goal in the 29th minute as Guinea Bissau claimed a famous win at the patchy Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Super Eagles of Nigeria were shocked at home by Guinea-Bissau in their first-leg match of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.
Speaking after the game, the Portuguese coach said, It is one match, [in] one match, any team can lose. One tournament? No.”
“I believe if we play [again] like we played today, we beat any team. Guinea was a very good loss”
The Super Eagles are still on course to qualify for AFCON 2023 despite being second in the qualifying group, but will need to step their game up if they are to do better than the second round finish from the 2021 edition.
