1998 Premier League champions AFC Leopards extended their imperious form by making it 10 games unbeaten following their 1-0 win over hapless Wazito in a league clash at the Kasarani Stadium on Thursday.
A first-half own goal by Kelvin Wesonga handed Ingwe all three points with Wazito extending their 15-minute half-time break by another 20 minutes due to a scuffle between Wazito officials and stadium stewards.
Ingwe were looking to extend their nine-game unbeaten run that had seen them collect a clean sheet in eight consecutive matches with the last time they conceded being back in mid-January.
Wazito on the other hand were out to overwrite their 11-game winless run that has left them languishing in the relegation zone with just two wins all season.
AFC Leopards had a bright start to the game as they dominated possession with the Wazito players chasing shadows in the opening exchanges.
Patrick Aussems’s men finally broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when Victor Omune floated in a brilliant cross that was turned into the net by Kelvin Wesonga for a fortuitous own goal.
Ingwe were awarded a penalty in the 44th minute when Maxwell Otieno was hacked down on the parameter of the box by Stanley Okwemba which drew wild protests from the Wazito players.
After an intervention by the linesman, the center referee awarded a freekick from the edge of the area which Maxwell Otieno failed to take advantage of as his feeble shot provided easy pickings for Ezekiel Owade with that being the last bit of action in the opening half.
Wazito failed to return for the second half on time despite AFC Leopards turning up early and were made to wait for more than 20 minutes as the match officials engaged the AFC Leopards' technical bench.
The Muhoroni-based side finally returned to the second half after a 35-minute break as the closing half resumed much to the frustration of the Ingwe Technical Bench.
AFC Leopards had a chance to extend their lead in the 58th minute when Lewis Bandi found Saad Musa with a cutback but the South Sudan international shot straight at Owade.
Wazito grew into the game and had their first meaningful chance of the game in the 76th minute when Griffins Miheso found Eneji Abubakar whose shot was comfortably dealt with by Levis Opiyo.
Ingwe held on for the 1-0 win and will next face Mathare United while Wazito host Vihiga Bullets in a relegation six-pointer. Both games are scheduled for Saturday 11 March.
