Ingwe chairman Dan Shikanda calls for patience and radical changes to end AFC Leopards' 26-year trophy drought.

AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has asked fans to remain patient as the club continues its pursuit of its first FKF Premier League title since 1998.

Leadership issues, frequent changes in the coaching staff, and instability within the playing unit have plagued the once-dominant team, which historically produced top players for the national team, Harambee Stars.

In the 2023/2024 season, Leopards managed a fifth-place finish in the FKF Premier League and secured third place in the FKF Cup. However, the elusive league title remains a sore spot for the fans.

"As your Chairman, I share your desire to see AFC Leopards consistently playing entertaining football and clinching trophies. The trophy drought since 1998 is a harsh reality for many of us, especially with the Generation Z supporters who make up a huge fanbase of AFC Leopards," Shikanda said during the recent AGM.

Shikanda emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the club since joining its management, despite facing numerous challenges.

"When I joined the management of AFC Leopards, my desire and objective was to come in and turn things around. I have continuously worked towards that despite a myriad of challenges. However, my hopes and aspirations are still alive," he added.

The chairman stressed that winning a league requires more than just passion, pointing to the need for comprehensive preparations, support, collaboration, and a conducive environment for everyone involved in the club’s activities.

"Let's be honest – winning a league requires more than just passion. It entails preparations, support, collaboration, and a conducive environment for each and everyone involved in one way or another in the club’s activities," Shikanda noted.

One of the major hurdles, according to Shikanda, is the club's adherence to traditional practices, which include strong member involvement in key decision-making processes.

"One of the key challenges we face as a club is clinging to the status quo since way back, which involves strong member involvement in key decision-making. This often opens room for strong internal politics.

"While member sovereignty is a core strength, it can sometimes lead to interference in critical matters, hindering progress," he added.

Shikanda also highlighted the detrimental impact of negative media attention and internal criticism on the club’s performance and sustainability.

"Constructive criticism is vital, but it needs to be delivered in a way that empowers, not discourages. More often, negative media attention from our own members directed towards the coaching staff, players, sponsors, and potential partnerships creates an atmosphere of negativity that undermines performance and sustainability of the club," he concluded.

Leopards head coach Thomas Trucha, who took over midway through the first leg after Tom Juma’s sacking, has identified four key signings as a top priority for the upcoming season.

The Czech national has already submitted the names of potential signings to the management.

The former Township Rollers coach cautioned that without these players challenging for the title next season would be difficult.
