AC Milan vs Napoli: 5 records set by Victor Osimhen in the Champions League

Osimhen was on target on his return to Napoli’s starting lineup, although it was not enough to hand the Neapolitans the victory.

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen set a few records on Tuesday night after scoring Napoli’s equaliser against AC Milan in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Osimhen had missed the first leg of the encounter last week, with Milan winning 1-0.

However, Osimhen returned to Napoli’s XI on Tuesday night, having made his return from an adductor injury as a substitute in the league game against Hellas Verona.

The Super Eagles star did show up as he scored a late equaliser to help Napoli to a 1-1 draw against their rivals.

But despite Osimhen’s late goal, Napoli crashed out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate following the 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture, showing why Osimhen was a big miss in the first leg.

Nonetheless, Osimhen did make history in the Champions League this season. We look at five records Osimhen set in the biggest club competition in the world.

Osimhen joins Chukwueze and Martins club

Following his goal against AC Milan, Osimhen is now the third Nigerian to score in the quarter-final of a Champions League match after Obafemi Martins and Samuel Chukwueze.

Martins scored for Inter in their quarter-final clash against Villarreal, while Chukwueze was ironically on target for the Yellow Submarines in a stunning upset over Bayern Munich last season.

Before this season, Napoli had never reached the quarter-final of the Champions League in their history.

But after they did, Osimhen made history by scoring the first goal for Napoli in the last eight of the competition.

After failing to score last week, it looked like Napoli would not score until Osimhen popped up in added time to score the equaliser.

First Nigerian to score in three consecutive knockout games

Osimhen’s equaliser against AC Milan means he is now the first Nigerian to score in three consecutive knockout games in the Champions League.

The Super Eagles star scored in the 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the round of 16 before scoring a brace against the same opponent in the return leg.

He missed the first leg against Milan but continued in the same vein on his return, scoring the equaliser.

Most knockout goals by a Nigerian

Following his latest goal against AC Milan, Osimhen is now Nigeria’s top scorer in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Osimhen was tied with Martins on three goals going into the game against the Rossoneri on Tuesday night, but he has now broken the tie with the late equaliser.

Most goals by a Nigerian in a single UCL season

With his goal against AC Milan, Osimhen joins Aiyegbeni and Martins as the Nigerians with the most goals in a single UCL campaign (5).

Aiyegbeni scored five goals for Maccabi Haifa in the 2003 group stage, including a hat-trick against Olympiacos, while Martins scored five for Inter Milan in the 2004/2005 season.
