Kwara United becomes the second NPFL club side to lose a coach this season.
Following his team’s 2-0 loss to Nasarawa United on Saturday, Abdulazeez Mohammed has resigned from his position as Kwara United's first team coach.
Mohammed announced to the media that he was resigning from his position immediately after his team's 2-0 loss at the New Jos Stadium, a situation confirmed in a statement issued by the club's media department on Saturday.
Prior to their 2-0 defeat, Kwara United were on a losing streak of two games, winning just once in their seven matches this season.
Things are going the wrong way - Mohammed
Before Saturday, Nasarawa United were the only team in the 2023 season, yet to get a win.
However, goals from the highly-experienced duo of King Osanga and Chinedu Ohanachom in the early moments of either half, were enough to give the Solid Miners reasons to break into tears of joy at the New Jos Stadium at full-time.
“I have to step aside given the consistent run of poor results. The potentials are there for us to do well, but, unfortunately, things are going the wrong way," Mohammed said to the press following the 2-0 defeat.
Mohammed made his coaching debut in the NPFL in 2020 with Katsina United, halfway into the season, and helped them to beat relegation but he was fired the following season following a string of poor results.
The Ilorin-based club unveiled him as the first team coach after the 2021/2022 season, with him, leading their CAF Confederation campaign. The team, however, failed to make the group stage.
Kwara United confirm Mohammed's departure
Reacting to the development on Saturday, Kwara United's general manager Bashir Badawiy revealed that management has accepted the decision of the coach and the next line of action will be announced soon.
"We have accepted his resignation, as he has accepted full responsibility for the club’s poor run.
"We cannot continue like this, despite the commitment of the government, the management, and stakeholders."
The defeat in Jos could see Kwara United, drop into relegation places when other fixtures are played on Sunday.
