5. Kenya vs. Senegal – (AFCON 2019)
During the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Kenya faced Senegal in their last group stage match of the tournament.
)
Senegalese had a star-stunned attack-line led by Sadio Mané and Matasi needed to be at his best but his performance was anything but convincing.
Harambee Stars held on for much of the first half, but as pressure mounted, Matasi made a shocking misjudgment of a routine cross, allowing Mané to score with ease.
The former Tusker FC goalkeeper's delayed reaction and poor positioning left fans in disbelief as Senegal pulled a 3-0 victory.
The most embarrassing moment came when Matasi appeared completely unprepared for Mané’s second goal.
Mane's strike seemed straightforward to handle, yet Matasi’s response was uncharacteristically sluggish. The former St George of Ethiopia's custodian poor decision-making throughout the game led to unnecessary goals, costing Kenya a fighting chance to progress in the tournament.
Critics pointed out that for a goalkeeper with his experience, such errors were unacceptable at the highest level.
4. Kenya vs. DR Congo –(2019)
Before AFCON 2019, Kenya played a friendly match against the Democratic Republic of Congo under then-coach Sebastien Migne hoping to fine-tune their squad.
)
Everything seemed to be going well after Michael Olunga’s brilliant goal put Kenya ahead. However, just four minutes from full-time, Matasi gifted DR Congo an equalizer in one of the most embarrassing blunders of his career.
A weak free-kick from Arthur Masuaku rolled towards him yet instead of making a simple save Matasi allowed the ball to slip through his legs.
Matasi’s earlier performance in the match had been commendable, including a crucial penalty save from Cedric Bakambu. However, his late-game error erased all his hard work, sparking concerns over his ability to remain focused for a full 90 minutes.
After the match, fans were divided—some defended him, citing pressure and fatigue, while others pointed out that such mistakes had become a pattern.
3. Ghana vs. Kenya – (AFCON 2019)
During Kenya’s final AFCON 2019 group qualifier against Ghana in Accra, Matasi’s mistake cost his team a vital result. The game was locked at 0-0 with only seven minutes left, and Kenya was on the verge of securing a famous draw. Then the worse moment of the match struck.
)
Caleb Ekuban unleashed harmless shot that Matasi seemed to have covered but to the disbelief of fans the ball slipped through his arms and into the net.
It was a bad outing for Harambee Stars who had defended bravely throughout the match. Matasi’s error not only handed Ghana a 1-0 victory but also cost Kenya a chance to finish top of the group.
2. Cameroon vs. Kenya – (AFCON Qualifier, 2024)
Matasi delivered a horror show against Cameroon during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations 9AFCON) qualifiers.
The match started poorly when he failed to save Vincent Aboubakar’s penalty, but things only got worse from there as in the 39th minute, Martin Hongla fired a routine shot toward goal- in what seemed like a moment of sheer incompetence, Matasi allowed the ball to slip past him giving Cameroon a 2-0 lead.
)
Just minutes later, Matasi was caught napping again when Bryan Mbeumo capitalized on a low cross that the goalkeeper completely failed to anticipate.
Matasi’s sluggish reactions made matters even worse, as he failed to stop Christian Bassogog from scoring Cameroon’s fourth goal of the match.
The final score was a heavy 4-1 defeat for Harambee Stars and many started calling for him to be dropped from the national team, citing his repeated blunders in crucial games.
1. Iran vs. Kenya – (2023)
Perhaps the most controversial of all his mistakes, Matasi’s blunder against Iran in a recent friendly match has drawn the most suspicion.
Both teams were tied at 1-1 late in the game, Iran sent a weak shot toward goal—one that any professional goalkeeper would be expected to save easily. But Matasi , who always boated to be the best in the country, failed to handle the ball lazily allowing it to slip through his hands and into the net, gifting Iran a 2-1 win.
The costly error sparked an immediate outcry from fans, with many taking to social media to question why Matasi continued to receive national team call-ups despite his history of costly errors.
