10 times better than Mason Greenwood — Serie A president rubbishes transfer rumours

Lazio club chairman addressed the links to Manchester United's Mason Greenwood.

SS Lazio chairman Claudio Lotito has rubbished the reports linking them with a move for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, claiming that they had their focus on a player multiple times better than the English youngster.

Greenwood to Lazio links

Manchester United distanced themselves from Greenwood after he was charged with sexual violence allegations, and although the case was dropped, with the club's statement implying the 22-year-old’s innocence, they decided it was best he continued his future away from the organisation.

This prompted a loan deal to LALIGA side Getafe, and despite impressing with the Azulones, he is expected to make a permanent move to a bigger club this summer, given the profile of his suitors.

He has been linked with the likes of Juventus, Marseille and Lazio, however, the leadership of the Rome-based club have publicly removed themselves from contention.

What Lazio’s chairman said

Lotito admitted to pursuing Greenwood last season, explaining that discrepancies in English and Italian transfer regulations caused the move to break down. He claimed that their desire for the player had since ended, and they are now focused on other, more impressive targets.

"Greenwood? Last year we were 20 minutes late due to a mismatch between the markets in Italy and England and so he fell through,” he said, per Goal.

“I had signed Greenwood last year but you didn't even know who he was. He fell through due to a mismatch of an hour between the two markets and the facts proved me right because he then did well.

"But it's not just Greenwood, there are also other players that you don't even know. If I told you a name, which I won't tell you because I want to keep you curious, that is worth 10 times Greenwood."

Meanwhile, Greenwood has returned to Manchester United's training ground in Carrington to resume preseason, while he waits for his future to get resolved.
