The Nigerian defender did not have the best of games and nearly cost his side all three points against Brighton
Nottingham Forest survived going down to 10 men and conceding from a worrying Ola Aina error to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Brighton.
In a hotly contested fixture that saw eight yellow cards, one red card on the pitch, and both managers sent to the stands, Nottingham Forest had substitute Ramon Sosa for a second-half equaliser that gave them a crucial draw away from home.
How it happened
The Tricky Trees had opened the scoring through a Chris Wood penalty before Brighton equalised thanks to a powerful Jack Hinshelwood header nearing the end of the first half.
A poor tackle from Aina close to the 18-yard box then allowed Brighton to take the lead as Danny Welbeck scored the first free-kick of the 2024/25 Premier League to make it 2-1 to the hosts, before Sosa rescued a point with his 70th-minute strike. .
With the game nearing it’s end, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White was shown a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Joao Pedro, and both Nuno Espirito Santo and his opposite number Fabian Hurzeler were also handed their marching orders in the aftermath of the fracas alongside one of the Tricky Trees assistant coaches.
It was not a great fixture for Nigerian players as in addition to Aina’s middling performance, his compatriot Taiwo Awoniyi remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes as he continues to fall in Espirito Santo’s pecking order.
